“Each day, nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrheal diseases.”

This is one of the 10 facts and figures stated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), an organization that helps countries develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience to achieve sustainable development outcomes.

UNDP set the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including Goal 6: Ensure Access to Water and Sanitation for All.

To achieve this goal, the Philippine Government is actively taking its role and created mechanisms and workable strategies addressing this challenge.

In the region, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) monitors government’s funded projects implemented by LGUs to address the pressing challenges brought about by unsafe potable water.

Barangay Naganacan in Sta. Maria, Isabela is one of the beneficiaries of the 2017 Local Government Support Funds – Assistance to Disadvantaged Municipalities (ADM) program.

16(L-R) Mayor Paguitan, PD Toribio and RD Jonathan Paul M. Leusen spearhead the ribbon cutting during the inauguration of the Naganacan Potable Water System in Sta. Maria, Isabela.

Amounting to P4-Million, more than 2,000 residents can now access cleaner and safer potable drinking water after the inauguration on January 17.

Regional Director Jonathan Paul M. Leusen Jr. said that implementing the water system is considered one of the most challenging projects under the Locally-Funded Projects (LFPs) of the Department.

Maysa nga challenging project para kadakami daytoy water system ngamin haan nga nalaka nga mapuntaan ti potable water wenno dayjay mabalin nga mainum nga danum,” the regional director said.

Further, he motivated LGU Sta. Maria to complete all its projects funded by the DILG before November ends this year including the evacuation center and road project.

These projects, he said, are a manifestation that the government is moving towards inclusive growth, benefitting every member of the society.

Uray man saggabassit ngem at least marikna kuma ti tattao nga ti gobyerno ket agtrabtrabaho para kanyayo,” RD Leusen said.

Along with the Regional Director who graced the activity were Isabela Provincial Director Corazon D. Toribio other DILG R2 personnel.# (Written by KC D. Sucuano)
